Like many freelancers or small business owners, we self-identify as Coffee Shop Warriors. You know who we are: we regularly arrive at our favorite cafes with laptops, notebooks, headphones and chargers in tow to make camp (office) for an afternoon. And while it goes without saying that we're coffee lovers under normal circumstances, returning to work and our usual haunts after a long weekend calls for an even bigger boost than usual, so we went on a coffee crawl around Buffalo to find the best places to get our fix, recover from Memorial Day festivities, and make ourselves at home. Check out some of our favorite Buffalo spots (in no particular order) in our roundup below, and remember, if you want to chat the coffee's always on us!
We've always loved Remedy House for its cheerful, comfy vibe, friendly service, and meticulously prepared offerings including lattes made with locally sourced walnut milk (and that bathroom wallpaper is to-die), but now their newly opened, canopy-covered outdoor seating area and just-debuted cocktail menu have us looking for reasons to leave. Go for the coffee, stay for the atmosphere.
It’s been hard to miss Tipico’s rise in the Buffalo coffee community (among other mentions they were selected as Buffalo Spree’s Best of WNY Best Coffee Shop last summer), and it’s well-earned. Their space is perfect for settling in for an afternoon with your laptop, and their super-friendly staff won’t even judge you for taking pictures of your Breadhive avocado toast. Their newly released Cold Brucha, a coffee kombucha combination created in collaboration with Buffalo’s Barrel + Brine is ideal for summer days in their bright space. And if you need a day to just work in bed, their food offerings are officially available on Skip the Dishes – you’re welcome.
Another Buffalo Spree Best of WNY winner for Best Vegan, Grindhaus is a cozy destination perfect for long afternoons of, well, grinding. Their hearty sandwiches truly won’t make you miss the meat either – their VLT rivals even the best real bacon sandwiches. Grab yourself a table or an armchair and settle in with a cup of pour-over coffee, or change it up with a refreshing blueberry lemonade.
Caffeology is our go-to on those days when we need a little indulgence. Their team will make you feel right at home, and will then make you the most giant mug of Buffalo truffle espresso with caramel white chocolate and toffee nut that will make all your worries go away, especially when paired with a Breadhive sea salt chocolate chip caramel cookie. But don’t let the comfort fool you – they take their coffee seriously, using 7 different methods to brew coffee depending on desired caffeine extraction to keep you going all day.
One of Perks’ biggest assets is their space – it’s large enough to spread out with your coworkers while still maintaining that intimate feeling all the best coffee shops have. Killer chalk art signage and work from local artists adorning the walls make it the perfect place when you need a little inspiration. And did we mention the Nutella croissant? 100% worth it.
Overwinter’s new espresso bar is a must-visit for any true coffee lover. Their signature single origin coffee flavors spiked with things like blueberry and graham cracker have been available to bring home for a while now, but in their new location they shine when paired with treats like Nature’s Apothecary’s date brownies and espresso chocolate chip biscotti crafted using their own beans. The shop is tiny so arrive early to snag a seat at the bar, and expect to stay fueled up all day and probably leave as new best friends with their creative, friendly team.
Undergrounds’ rotating selection of coffees roasted in-house and seasonal offerings means you’ll always have something new to try in their cozy, colorful space, whose eclectic décor is sure to keep you inspired even if whatever you’re working on isn’t. Their sandwich names alone are almost worth ordering one, and the flavors live up to them. If you’re craving something lighter, we loved their Fit Fusion smoothies, and they keep Snowy Owl Kombucha on tap.
We’ve been longtime fans of Public Espresso, but we can’t get enough of their expanded corner spot in the Hotel Lafayette. Hunker down on a sofa or spread out at one of their roomy group tables, and don’t worry, outlets are plentiful. We’ve probably talked too much about our love of their hash bowl (can you blame us?), and Cruller Friday’s are always a must. We love their Nitro Brew for days when we just need to get down to business, but their turmeric latte is our new very close second.
